  • Sylvan Esso and Mr Twin Sister at Terminal 5 (January 23, 2015)
  • (of Megafaun), are quite the success story. 2014 saw them release their self-titled debut, an album that was adored by fans and critics alike. Since their formation two years ago, they have gone from playing small rooms like Mercury Lounge and Bowery Ballroom to selling out Terminal 5 last Friday night. Mr Twin Sister kicked off the evening with a set of their sexy nighttime funk jams, filling out Terminal 5 surprisingly well along the way (not a knock on them - the venue's acoustics can be hit or miss). Their set was mostly comprised with material from last year's self-titled album, but they made room for Twin Sister material such as "Bad Street" and "All Around and Away We Go." As it turned out, the band helped play a hand in the formation of Sylvan Esso, as Meath and Sanborn met at a Twin Sister (before they changed their name with a Mr) years ago, with their friendship eventually turning into Sylvan Esso. The choice of Mr Twin Sister as an opener made sense stylistically, but after learning this particular bit of information, it made the selection that much more special. You can learn a lot about a band about how they handle certain situations. Such as sudden sound issues that leave them vulnerable, ... front of people was more than refreshing. You can tell that they're thankful of the position that there in, making the experience of watching them play even more gratifying. To be honest, I was quite taken aback to learn that Sylvan Esso sold out Terminal 5. But after finally seeing how much energy they bring to the table while performing, it all makes sense. They've done quite well for themselves, but it's only the beginning. Sylvan Esso are on the fast track to the top, and I'll be rooting for them all the way. • What's going on Friday? (The Sidekicks, Sylvan Esso, Sufjan Stevens, Foxing, Rhyton, Bottoms, Saul Williams & more)
  • Esso, Mr. Twin Sister @ Terminal 5 Sylvan Esso blew right up in 2014, skipping straight from Bowery Ballroom to a sold-out show at Terminal 5. Their appealing debut album and charming stage presence of singer Amelia Meath have a lot to do with it. If you're going, get there early for Mr Twin Sister who fit right in with SE's inviting, danceable sound. Bottoms, DJ Samson (DJ), Ryan Smith (DJ) @ Secret Project Robot Brooklyn trio Bottoms make bass-heavy, slightly gothy techno/electro dance music, as heard on their debut EP which is out this week. Tonight's the release show it with MEN's DJ Samson on DJ duties.

"Executive production by Paul Epworth with Bayley producing ensures that level of aural consistency, meaning ZABA which is likened to 'a backdrop of man-made wilderness,' according to the band directly, is awash with ambient and alluring songcraft." Listen on Spotify. 5. Mr Twin Sister - Mr Twin Sister Dark disco and electronic pop on album #2 from the Long Island band. "The eight tracks on the self-titled second album are definitely night-time grooves, which occupy the same mood without jumping around from genre to genre, and as an album it works wonderfully, because Mr Twin Sister have an attention to the small details that stands to them when they delve deep into genres like disco and funk. "Andrea Estella's lyrics suit the vibe, their disco-noir sound is escapism and she often seeks to escape. 'In The House Of Yes' she locks herself in her room, drinks to a stupor and dances on her own own til her head is on the ground. 'Rude Boy' finds her rejecting the advances of an opposite ("I have all the drinks i can handle"), content to exist in the space. "Is there a real me? Or am I just a series of nights," she sings on 'Blush'. The thrilling 'Out Of The Dark' has her questioning identity too - "I am a woman / But inside I'm a man / And I want to be as gay as I can." The Johnny Jewel-esque '12 Angels' has someone singing about being in drag to reinforce the theme. "Despite the album being united in tone, there's a sense that Mr Twin Sister aren't settled. It's in the artwork which is deliberately unfinished and packaged, it's in the 37-minute running time and it's in the new name. The altered band have reset and are heading in their own independent direction and making great music as part of the process." Listen on Spotify 4. FKA twigs - LP1 2014's magnetic leftfield R&B star. The three songs they've shared since then -- "Out Of The Dark," "Blush," "In The House Of Yes" -- are all great. And they're all great in ways that are different from one another and different from anything the band had done previously. Those three songs, plus five more, appear on the band's brand-new self-titled album, which is coming out next week. And right now, you can stream the whole thing at Pitchfork. • Mr Twin Sister - "In The House Of Yes"
  • I've harped on this before, but "Mr Twin Sister" is not a good band name. But when the band formerly known as Twin Sister added that mystifying article to the front of their name, they also seemingly gave themselves a creative shot in the arm. The band's self-titled album is out later this month, and the two songs we've heard from it, "Out Of The Dark" and "Blush," have both been fire -- confident, smooth songs that hit the same pleasure centers without sounding anything like one another. Their new "In The House Of Yes" follows suit. It's an a jazzy and house-inflected pop number, and it's elegant and slick and jazzy. For those of us who loved Everything But The Girl's 1999 album Temperamental, it sounds just about perfect this morning. Listen to it below. Mr Twin Sister is out 9/23 on Twin Group/Infinite Best. Now, please excuse me while I dig up my cassette copy of Temperamental. Mr Twin Sister - "In The House Of Yes"

  • Mr Twin Sister Announce New Album, Share "Blush"
  • This spring, dreamy New York indie pop group Twin Sister switched things up by changing their name to Mr. Twin Sister. Now, they've unveiled their first album under the new moniker. Their self-titled effort will be out on September 23 on Twin Group/Infinite Best. This announcement comes with another small moniker change, as the period has been removed from the "Mr" in "Mr Twin Sister." The band tweeted, "Left the period off Mr cause YOLO." The album includes the previously unveiled cut "Out of the Dark," plus the newly shared "Blush." While the former is a sequencer-driven thumper, the latter drifts hazily amid a cloud of pillowy keys and strings. Hear both songs below. • Mr. Twin Sister - "Blush"
  • The Long Island indie-poppers Twin Sister recently made the baffling decision to change their name to Mr. Twin Sister, which, I think we can all agree, is not a good band name at all. But band names matter way less than the actual music coming out of those bands, and right now, Mr. Twin Sister might be better than they've ever been. As they changed their name, they released the skittery and synthy new song "Out Of The Dark," and it was good. And now they've announced plans for a self-titled album, coming next month, and shared a languorous new torch song called "Blush." It's a finely orchestrated, idiosyncratic

  • Details are still slim regarding their next record, but Twin Sister made two key moves today: they shared a new single that's definitely on the indie dance side of things (think: The Knife, only less creepy) and they added a "Mr." to the front of their name. It's unclear if the latter is meant to mark a creative detour, concept album or pending lawsuit; either way, "Out of the Dark" -- which is also available as a free download here -- is promising indeed... • Mr. Twin Sister - "Out Of The Dark"
  • Twin Sister spent the early part of this decade developing a reputation as "Long Island's dreamiest dream pop band" before saturating pop culture in unexpected ways such as being sampled on a Kendrick Lamar song and singer Andrea Estella co-starring in the Veronica Mars movie. They're back with a new single called "Out Of The Dark," but their name has changed slightly, as has their sound. From now on they'll be called Mr. Twin Sister, and the song is a darkly sleek, squirmy electro-pop song that makes me wonder if they've been jamming Liars and Factory Floor. The key lyric goes like so: "I am a woman, ... bangs, so download it below or hear it an animated YouTube video. • Twin Sister's Andrea Estella Cast in 'Veronica Mars' Movie
  • folks behind Veronica Mars raised an incredible $5.7 million for a comeback movie through Kickstarter, but apparently that wasn't enough to attract actress Leighton Meester (of Gossip Girl fame) back to reprise her role as Carrie Bishop. Excitingly for indie music fans, creator Rob Thomas has cast Twin Sister frontwoman Andrea Estella in Meester's place. This news was revealed in an email to Kickstarter backers [via the Hollywood Reporter]. Thomas explained that Meester was unavailable due to a scheduling conflict, and he needed a performer who could sing for the role. "I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie," he wrote. He is a fan of Twin Sister, and often listened to their song "I Want a House" when penning the script. At least two Twin Sister tunes will apparently be featured in the film. "[Estella] has an amazing voice; I can't get enough of it," Thomas enthused. Estella reportedly had never watched the show before signing on to do the movie. "I watched the Veronica Mars pilot and was totally into it!" she admitted in a statement. "It's the exact kind of show I would get obsessed with, so it's been a bit of dream to be in a movie, especially being a messed-up rock princess. How could I say no? I think the VM fans are going to be very happy!" The Veronica Mars film is expected out next year. Twin Sister's Andrea Estella Cast in 'Veronica Mars' Movie

  • Twin Sister's Andrea Estella to Replace Leighton Meester in "Veronica Mars" Movie
  • The Kickstarter-funded film of the hit TV show "Veronica Mars" just took an interesting turn. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Leighton Meester (aka Blair from "Gossip Girl") will be replaced by Andrea Estella of New York indie pop band Twin Sister. She'll take on Meester's former role of Carrie Bishop, a character who appeared in two episodes of the television series. Meester was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts. According to THR, series creator Rob Thomas wrote the film's Kickstarter backers and explained that he cast Estella simply because he's a big Twin Sister fan and wanted ... sing. "We needed a performer who could sing in this important role. Once it became evident that we couldn't make Leighton's schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie." Thomas also said that Estella "has an amazing voice; I can't get enough of it" and that two Twin Sister songs will be featured in the movie. This marks Estella's film debut, and her introduction to the "Veronica Mars" empire, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She'd never seen an episode of the film prior to signing on, but said, "It's the exact kind of show I would get obsessed with, so it's been a bit of dream to be in a movie, especially being a messed-up rock princess. How could I say no?" The Veronica Mars film is scheduled for release next year. Last year, Kendrick sampled the languorous Long Island quintet's "Meet The Frownies" on good kid, m.A.A.d city's Dr. Dre-produced "The Recipe," though this step's a bit bigger, and much more filmic: Lead singer Andrea Estella will replace Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester in the cultishly adored TV series Veronica Mars's Kickstarter-enabled big-screen adaptation. Leighton was supposed to reprise her small role from the show (she appeared in two episodes) as Carrie Bishop, a character Estella's called a "messed-up rock princess." According to an email sent to the film's Kickstarter's backers, Leighton couldn't commit, show creator Rob Thomas wanted to use Twin Sister in the film anyway and needed an actress who could sing, all around and away we go Andrea was cast. Says Estella: "I watched the Veronica Mars pilot and was totally into it! It's the exact kind of show I would get obsessed with, so it's been a bit of dream to be in a movie, especially being a messed-up rock princess. How could I say no? I think the VM fans are going to be very happy!"
