  • I am deeply sorry to have missed Mr Twin Sister, my favorite band of 2014 (and probably of 2011, too, let's be honest) play what looks like an ecstatic festival show. You can dance to this music, you can existentially panic to it or you can fall in love: what else is there? Mr Twin Sister is available on Bandcamp and other fine retail outlets. Although it could negatively impact Lake and Rivera, the law was actually drafted in response to the case of a straight Australian couple who abandoned a surrogate baby with Down's Syndrome and left the country with his healthy twin sister. The new law bans surrogacy for all foreigners, and says the biological mother must be a sibling of one of the parents. Nevertheless, the law eliminates a popular destination for gay couples to have surrogate babies. An estimated 2,000 foreign couples travel to Thailand each year for that purpose, due to

  • REVIEW: Mr Twin Sister, Moon King, Funeral Advantage (The Middle East Upstairs 7/23)
  • their bombast some backbone, especially highlighted in "Crucify". A highlight of the set was "Impossible," as the slower tune helped strengthen the dynamics of the set. Benjamin donned a guitar for the song, and unleashed chilling vocal harmonies with Wilde during the chorus. Mr Twin Sister, illuminated by soft red light, launched the evening into an ethereal state that was somewhat-unexpectedly driven by supreme percussion. Andrea Estella's razor-sharp vocal hooks glittered throughout a set populated by old, new, and unreleased cuts, though some of the more industrial-tinged takes off of their latest LP were absent. There's a big difference between airy and lethargy, however, and Mr Twin Sister had the crowd dancing during most of their extended set.Songs like "In the House of Yes" with its corrugated funk and a lengthened jam of "Rude Boy" showcased their exquisite musicianship; members would often switch instruments mid-song, and there were moments when three and four of them at a time would be splitting percussion duties across congas, a drum kit, and two different sets of electronic drums. Singer and guitarist Eric Cardona would often switch to a tenor sax as well as help project ... electrical issue which temporarily put half the band out of commission could cast a dour mood over the set, as Estella and Cardona delivered three songs in a rippling interlude, including a new one with Estella's voice a filament spidering across the chords. Though the set was slightly on the longer side, the impressive display didn't feel bloated, and capped a night coated in the surreal. • Pitchfork Music Festival 2015: Saturday Recap
  • lucky to see (on account of my arrival time), and as they plowed through each song like it was their last I began to fully embrace the hype surrounding them. They'll be back in Chicago two weeks from now to play at Lollapalooza, so start getting excited now. With a short schedule gap before Mr Twin Sister, I dropped by the Green stage to see what Future Brown is all about. The poly-genre collective makes music that's all over the map, but are perhaps most popular for some of their more urban and hip hop forays, in particular two tracks with Chicago's own up-and-coming Tink (a member of my Class of 2015). ... looked bored. After three songs I walked away, hip hop collective Sicko Mobb walked out on stage trying to pump up the crowd. Perhaps things got better from there, but in all honesty I didn't care enough to find out if they did. As ominous looking storm clouds rolled in to Union Park, Mr Twin Sister took the stage. You could call it good luck, because the band's music thrives on darkness as they evoke the atmosphere of a smoky nightclub. That's not something easily attainable at 3:30 in the afternoon in a park. While their set wasn't exactly high energy, the mixture of synths, bongos, drum machines, bass, electric

  • Mr Twin Sister - "In The House Of Yes"
  • I've harped on this before, but "Mr Twin Sister" is not a good band name. But when the band formerly known as Twin Sister added that mystifying article to the front of their name, they also seemingly gave themselves a creative shot in the arm. The band's self-titled album is out later this month, and the two songs we've heard from it, "Out Of The Dark" and "Blush," have both been fire -- confident, smooth songs that hit the same pleasure centers without sounding anything like one another. Their new "In The House Of Yes" follows suit. It's an a jazzy and house-inflected pop number, and it's elegant and slick and jazzy. For those of us who loved Everything But The Girl's 1999 album Temperamental, it sounds just about perfect this morning. Listen to it below. Mr Twin Sister is out 9/23 on Twin Group/Infinite Best. Now, please excuse me while I dig up my cassette copy of Temperamental. Mr Twin Sister - "In The House Of Yes"

  • Mr Twin Sister Announce New Album, Share "Blush"
  • This spring, dreamy New York indie pop group Twin Sister switched things up by changing their name to Mr. Twin Sister. Now, they've unveiled their first album under the new moniker. Their self-titled effort will be out on September 23 on Twin Group/Infinite Best. This announcement comes with another small moniker change, as the period has been removed from the "Mr" in "Mr Twin Sister." The band tweeted, "Left the period off Mr cause YOLO." The album includes the previously unveiled cut "Out of the Dark," plus the newly shared "Blush." While the former is a sequencer-driven thumper, the latter drifts hazily amid a cloud of pillowy keys and strings. Hear both songs below. Both tunes feature string quartet arrangements by Carlos Hernandez of Ava Luna. They were produced and mixed by the band, along with Jon Low; we're guessing that the same team worked on the rest of Mr Twin Sister too. The album can be ordered over on iTunes. A few of the tracks clock in at more than six and a half minutes. Mr Twin Sister: 1. Sensitive 2. Rude Boy 3. In the House of Yes 4. Blush 5. Out of the Dark 6. Twelve Angels 7. Medford 8. • Mr. Twin Sister - "Blush"
  • The Long Island indie-poppers Twin Sister recently made the baffling decision to change their name to Mr. Twin Sister, which, I think we can all agree, is not a good band name at all. But band names matter way less than the actual music coming out of those bands, and right now, Mr. Twin Sister might be better than they've ever been. As they changed their name, they released the skittery and synthy new song "Out Of The Dark," and it was good. And now they've announced plans for a self-titled album, coming next month, and shared a languorous new torch song called "Blush." It's a finely orchestrated, idiosyncratic

  • Details are still slim regarding their next record, but Twin Sister made two key moves today: they shared a new single that's definitely on the indie dance side of things (think: The Knife, only less creepy) and they added a "Mr." to the front of their name. It's unclear if the latter is meant to mark a creative detour, concept album or pending lawsuit; either way, "Out of the Dark" -- which is also available as a free download here -- is promising indeed... • Mr. Twin Sister - "Out Of The Dark"
  • Twin Sister spent the early part of this decade developing a reputation as "Long Island's dreamiest dream pop band" before saturating pop culture in unexpected ways such as being sampled on a Kendrick Lamar song and singer Andrea Estella co-starring in the Veronica Mars movie. They're back with a new single called "Out Of The Dark," but their name has changed slightly, as has their sound. From now on they'll be called Mr. Twin Sister, and the song is a darkly sleek, squirmy electro-pop song that makes me wonder if they've been jamming Liars and Factory Floor. The key lyric goes like so: "I am a woman, ... bangs, so download it below or hear it an animated YouTube video. If this is the end for 285 Kent, the spot has already carved out a place in history, serving as a locus, for a few years, of energy within the city's music scene. We'll remember it as the place where Frank Ocean moshed to Trash Talk, or where A$AP Rocky and Grimes shared a stage, or where Oneohtrix Point Never and Twin Sister and John Maus played Stereogum's 2011 CMJ showcase. • Twin Sister's Andrea Estella Cast in 'Veronica Mars' Movie
  • folks behind Veronica Mars raised an incredible $5.7 million for a comeback movie through Kickstarter, but apparently that wasn't enough to attract actress Leighton Meester (of Gossip Girl fame) back to reprise her role as Carrie Bishop. Excitingly for indie music fans, creator Rob Thomas has cast Twin Sister frontwoman Andrea Estella in Meester's place. This news was revealed in an email to Kickstarter backers [via the Hollywood Reporter]. Thomas explained that Meester was unavailable due to a scheduling conflict, and he needed a performer who could sing for the role. "I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie," he wrote. He is a fan of Twin Sister, and often listened to their song "I Want a House" when penning the script. At least two Twin Sister tunes will apparently be featured in the film. "[Estella] has an amazing voice; I can't get enough of it," Thomas enthused. Estella reportedly had never watched the show before signing on to do the movie. "I watched the Veronica Mars pilot and was totally into it!" she admitted in a statement. "It's the exact kind of show I would get obsessed with, so it's been a bit of dream to be in a movie, especially being a messed-up rock princess. How could I say no? I think the VM fans are going to be very happy!" The Veronica Mars film is expected out next year. Twin Sister's Andrea Estella Cast in 'Veronica Mars' Movie

  • Twin Sister's Andrea Estella to Replace Leighton Meester in "Veronica Mars" Movie
  • The Kickstarter-funded film of the hit TV show "Veronica Mars" just took an interesting turn. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Leighton Meester (aka Blair from "Gossip Girl") will be replaced by Andrea Estella of New York indie pop band Twin Sister. She'll take on Meester's former role of Carrie Bishop, a character who appeared in two episodes of the television series. Meester was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts. According to THR, series creator Rob Thomas wrote the film's Kickstarter backers and explained that he cast Estella simply because he's a big Twin Sister fan and wanted ... sing. "We needed a performer who could sing in this important role. Once it became evident that we couldn't make Leighton's schedule work, I decided to cast someone from a band I already wanted in the movie." Thomas also said that Estella "has an amazing voice; I can't get enough of it" and that two Twin Sister songs will be featured in the movie. This marks Estella's film debut, and her introduction to the "Veronica Mars" empire, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She'd never seen an episode of the film prior to signing on, but said, "It's the exact kind of show I would get obsessed with, so it's been a bit of dream to be in a movie, especially being a messed-up rock princess. How could I say no?" The Veronica Mars film is scheduled for release next year. • Full disclosure: I'm coming into this review with a negative bias towards the individuals in Twin Sister. After an email and phone interview failed to produce any responses of great depth or interest, I concluded they were a group of extremely boring people. Which is interesting because their debut In Heaven is not boring. Rather it's self-deprecating, three-dimensional and engaging, in other words all the things the band members are not as individuals...

  • No one can accuse Twin Sister of taking the easy route. With two vocalists, five songwriters and no two songs that sound bloodrelated, they definitely had their work cut out for them on their debut album. She insinuates, coaxes, glides along on a narcotic cloud through bright arrangements of synthesizer, drum machine, bass and the occasional glockenspiel. • So much about In Heaven, the full-length debut from Long Island quintet Twin Sister, could be boring as hell: The music flirts with all those annoying genre buzzwords (i.e. "chillwave"); the songs get compared to trend-setters like Beach House and Bjork, mainly because of sweet-natured vocalist Andrea Estella, and the arrangements don't tend to surprise all that much (check the glowing '80s beats on "Space Babe" or the lazily unfolding synth arpeggios that decorate "Luna's Theme")...

  • Twin Sister are a Brooklyn-by-way-of-Long Island quintet that do so much so well. Their songs have a remarkable sense of atmosphere and romanticism. They nod at their heroes-- maybe Stereolab and Björk, maybe Cocteau Twins or 1980s pop-- without overtly stealing. They seem to know they are capable of great things; perhaps ostentatiously, they released a trailer for Color Your Life, just their second EP (following November 2008's brief but occasionally stunning Vampires With Dreaming Kids)...
